Dance like No One's watching
It's almost time, your checklist is coming along nicely, but let's not leave out a very crucial aspect. Let's talk about music brides and brides to be. It seems to just seamlessly fit in somehow on the big day but it does take planning and thought to orchestrate the right music from walking down the aisle, to the first dance all the way to the very last party hit played.
Music, like every other element, coincides with the type of wedding style you are having. Traditional music is not always necessary as the music really is a true representation of the bride and groom's personality. Some couples opt for live music, pianist, violinist or dj. There is no wrong in this process. Your music has to suit your wedding style and vibe.
Music for the ceremony and reception vary. Typically you want music that is calm and soft playing at the ceremony to set the romantic and celebratory mood. It also serves to act as a very inconspicuous way of removing the jitters from the very anxious bride, groom and bridal party. For the reception, things can pump up a bit but intially you'll want to start off nice and slow throughout the formalities and then get into the popular and favorite jams as the reception heats up.
Your wedding song is completely personal and there is no judgement here. If Justin Beiber is your top pick then do your thing lol. However, picking a song that can withstand time always wins and is equally appealing and entertaining for all the varying ages of your guest.
Getting the DJ and music together is usually a task inadvertently assigned to the groom. But it's also a collaborative effort between the couple to decide on the music and songs they want featured. Brides, ensure your groom meets with your DJ in advance to select your music of preference so every song played meets both your approval as well as to ensure that he or she can fullfil your expectations. A DJ who flunks can completely destroy the energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment of your reception. In my case, we emphasised to the DJ that we wanted a selection of music that also include some songs from our Caribbean diaspora. Our DJ, Al Sibille of Epic DJ Entertainment absolutely delivered. He was a hit at our wedding and the guests loved him.
Finally, it is your big day, but we would like all guest to enjoy your music choices with the most appropriate music to fit the crowd. Have something for everyone invited at different intervals and try to omit the extremely profane music. Granny at table 2 may not approve.

Totally agree that choice of music is extremely important! And lol @ Granny not approving - definitely leave out the profanity!
ReplyDeleteDo you have any opinions about couples doing a special 'first dance' e.g. choreography with their wedding party? Gimmicky or no? Would love to see a post on that!
